9 August in the history of Mykolaiv combined shipbuilding, the “Okean” plant, Russian shelling, a combat operation on Kinburn, and new transport for the Korabelnyi District.
9 August 1794 Old Style: the first ship of the line was launched in Mykolaiv
At the Mykolaiv Admiralty they launched the first ship of the line built in Mykolaiv, worked on by Semen Ivanovich Afanasyev and Oleksandr Petrovych Sokolov. The ship was later named “Saint Pavel”, although this only happened in 1797. Important clarification: 9 August 1794 is the date in the Julian calendar; in the modern Gregorian calendar this is 20 August 1794.
9 August 1954: the “birthday” of a cruiser from the Mykolaiv shipyard
On the cruiser “Mikhail Kutuzov”, built at the Black Sea Shipbuilding Yard in Mykolaiv, they hoisted the naval ensign on this day – 9 August 1954 is considered the ship’s birthday. The hull itself was launched much earlier – on 29 November 1951, so the common version that the cruiser was launched on 9 August 1954 is incorrect.
9 August 2019: “Okean” returned ALICE to service
The “Okean” shipyard in the Korabelnyi District brought the repaired freighter ALICE out of dry dock. The vessel was in dock from 3 June to 9 August 2019, and 150 workers from “Okean” and another 200 specialists from subcontracting organizations worked on the repair.
9 August 2022: shelling of the Korabelnyi District and nearly 8 hours fighting the fire
At about 07:00 Russian forces shelled the outskirts of Mykolaiv, and locals reported strikes on the Korabelnyi District. That same day, after another shelling, the Halytsynivske forest tract burned: the fire was fought from 14:40 to 22:30, the blaze affected 5 ha of canopy fire and 10 ha of surface fire, and the rescuers’ work was hindered by repeated shelling and unexploded ordnance.
9 August 2024: Ukrainian landing on the Kinburn Spit
Ukrainian special forces carried out a raid on the occupied Kinburn Spit. According to the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, during the operation they destroyed 6 units of armored vehicles and about 30 Russian servicemen, attacked several fortified positions and raised the Military Intelligence flag.
9 August 2025: 9 new trolleybuses and two routes for the Korabelnyi District
Mykolaiv received from Denmark another 9 PTS trolleybuses with autonomous running capability, bringing the total number of vehicles transferred under cooperation with Denmark to 18. The municipal enterprise “Mykolaivelektrotrans” announced two new routes specifically for the Korabelnyi District: an internal Korabelnyi route via the bypass road and a Kulbakine – Korabelnyi route terminating on Aivazovskyi Street.

9 August 1945 the American atomic bomb exploded over the Japanese city of Nagasaki at 11:02, causing catastrophic destruction and mass loss of life. And on 9 August 1999 the President of Russia Boris Yeltsin appointed Vladimir Putin acting prime minister, and on the same day named him his preferred successor for the presidency.
For Mykolaiv this date turned out surprisingly “ship-related”: from the first large ship of the line and a Soviet cruiser to ship repairs at “Okean”. But recent history added very different pages to 9 August – Russian shelling, fires and a combat operation on Kinburn.
