Mortality in Ukraine is almost four times higher than the birth rate; in the Mykolaiv region over the six-month period — 1,955 newborns

The number of newborns decreased by 16% compared with last year and nearly halved compared with pre-war levels, with the largest declines in frontline regions

In the first half of 2026, 1,955 children were born in Mykolaiv Oblast, while nationwide there is a significant excess of deaths over births, according to an analysis of Ministry of Justice data prepared by “Opendatabot”.

During this period, 73,292 births and 259,853 deaths were registered in Ukraine, which is the first officially confirmed increase in mortality in the last 5 years.

Compared with the same period last year, births fell by 16%, and compared to pre-war times the decline is almost twofold. Now about 12 thousand newborns appear each month versus approximately 32 thousand 10 years ago.

The biggest decline in births was recorded in front-line regions: in Donetsk region the number of newborns has decreased threefold, in Zaporizhzhia Oblast the reduction is 23%. Negative trends are also seen in Vinnytsia, Lviv and Ternopil oblasts — by about 20%.

The leader in number of births was Kyiv8,352 children in half a year. Following are Lviv Oblast with 6,617, Dnipropetrovsk — 5,611 and Odesa — 5,450 newborns.

The analysis was prepared by “Opendatabot” based on official Ministry of Justice figures reflecting the registration of civil status acts by region.
