In Mykolaiv, an ex-prisoner demanded $700 for a non-existent debt — threatened murder and arson

In Mykolaiv, law enforcement detained a 34-year-old man who demanded 700 US dollars from a resident of Bashtanka for a fabricated debt.
The regional police reported the extortion and the arrest, noting that the suspect had been released from prison only three months earlier.
According to the investigation, a repeatedly convicted member of the criminal underworld, under a contrived pretext, met with the victim several times, exerting psychological pressure and threatening murder and arson of property, demanding the transfer of 700 US dollars.
Under police supervision, the victim handed the intermediary 25 thousand hryvnias, after which the offender was detained in procedural order under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
The same day, investigators informed the detainee of suspicion under part 4 of Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, and during sanctioned searches they seized cash and other physical evidence.
The court imposed pretrial detention on the suspect; he faces a sentence of up to 12 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property.
