Soldiers were fed expired food: suppliers of ration packs for the Armed Forces of Ukraine suspected of fraud
The paperwork is "high-quality", but the food is expired: how millions were made on ration packs for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Two entrepreneurs-suppliers of daily field rations for the Armed Forces of Ukraine are suspected of large-scale fraud involving food supplies for the military. According to the investigation, the suspects forged manufacturer declarations about product quality, and they assembled the rations so that fit products were mixed with expired or otherwise unfit-for-consumption items.
After that everything was packed into a single set and sent to the troops. This concerns the supply of substandard daily field food rations totaling more than 71 million UAH.
The investigation found that the director of one LLC, together with his deputy, provided supplies of substandard rations to the military worth 62.5 million UAH. The head of another company, according to law enforcement, organized a similar supply for an additional 8.6 million UAH.
According to the investigation, implementing the scheme was made possible by actions of the former acting director of the Department of Public Procurement and Supply of Material Resources of the Ministry of Defense. When concluding contracts with the entrepreneurs, the official did not include a clause requiring mandatory quality checks of the goods. Because of this, the products reached the troops without proper control.
At the front, such rations caused mass complaints. Forensic commodity examinations confirmed that the food did not meet quality and safety requirements.
The state, represented by the Ministry of Defense, suffered losses of more than 71 million UAH. All suspects have been notified of suspicion. The suppliers are accused of misappropriation of funds, official forgery, and introducing dangerous products into circulation. The former official is accused of negligent performance of military duty, which caused grave consequences under martial law.
A motion has already been filed with the court to impose pretrial detention on the company executives with the possibility of bail in the amount of the damages. The investigation continues. Law enforcement is checking other possible episodes and identifying persons who may be involved in this scheme.
Against the backdrop of the full-scale war, such profiteering from feeding the military looks especially cynical. After all, low-quality and dangerous food could directly affect not only the defenders’ health but also their combat capability.
