Toll highways are coming soon: drivers may be forced to pay for a trip from Mykolaiv to Odesa

The flow of agricultural exports to the ports of the Odesa region is placing critical strain on the route, while international funds are already considering participation in financing

The state plans to introduce toll motorways on the highways «Mykolaiv–Odesa» and «Odesa–Reni». This was reported in an interview with Novyny Live by the head of the State Recovery Agency, Serhii Sukhomlyn.

According to him, consultations are underway with the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on attracting investments for such projects. At the same time, implementation is currently constrained by the risks of war: it is difficult for investors to insure capital and there are no guarantees of recovering invested funds.

The head of the agency outlined which routes could be the first and why they are being considered by international donors.

— This is an absolutely real story. And even today international business, some funds are already beginning to talk about building such roads. Today the country is at war. It is clear that insurance issues and the question of fund recovery considerably limit this process. But the routes, obviously, will be connections with Europe. What we are currently considering together with major donors — the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development — could be «Odesa–Reni». It is also needed for the development of Ukraine, for the development of the ports of Odesa Oblast.
This is the «Mykolaiv–Odesa» road, which carries a huge load from agricultural exporters who direct their products to Ukrainian ports. And many other roads that can give people the opportunity to travel safely, and most importantly, quickly. And in doing so, saving fuel, which is also not cheap today, to get from point A to point B.
