Death after a routine operation: in Mykolaiv region, a 16-year-old girl did not survive treatment
On March 17, she was transferred in serious condition to the regional children's hospital, where a repeat operation and intensive care were carried out; examinations were ordered
In the Mykolaiv Oblast, a 16-year-old patient died after surgical intervention and subsequent complications: this occurred on 28 March, and law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into possible improper performance of duties by medical staff.
The incident was reported by the Prosecutor’s Office of Mykolaiv Oblast and the Communications Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police, which are coordinating and providing procedural support for the investigation.
According to the investigation, the mother brought her daughter to the emergency department of the Voznesensk Multidisciplinary Hospital with suspected appendicitis on 12 March 2026. After examinations the child underwent surgery on 14 March, but shortly after the procedure her condition began to deteriorate sharply.
On 17 March the girl was transferred in extremely serious condition to the Mykolaiv Regional Children’s Hospital. There doctors diagnosed “sepsis”, performed emergency surgery and started intensive therapy, after which she fell into a coma.
Despite treatment and resuscitation measures, the child’s life could not be saved — death in the hospital was confirmed on 28 March.
Investigators of the Voznesensk district police department opened a criminal case on signs of an offense provided for in part 2 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — this concerns improper performance of professional duties by a medical worker that led to grave consequences for a minor. The article’s sanction provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to three years with possible additional deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for an equivalent period.
Within the proceedings, the necessary examinations have been ordered to establish the causes of the child’s death and to assess the quality of the medical care provided.
