Will Ukraine be covered in dust from the Sahara? The official answer from meteorologists

Dust from Africa is alarming the internet, but it won't reach Mykolaiv region

Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center 13 April 2026 reported that it has recently been receiving many inquiries about a possible influx of dust from the Sahara. According to satellite data EUMETSAT, there is currently a transport of a small amount of dust in the airspace over the Mediterranean Sea toward southern Italy.

However, for most of Ukraine, including Mykolaiv region, the situation will remain calm for the next two days. The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center explained that northwesterly airflows will prevail over the country’s territory, and these will not favor the transport of this dust into Ukrainian territory.

Only on 16 April is a change in the movement of air masses to westerly expected. This, according to forecasters, may create conditions for the arrival of an air mass with a small dust content, but only to the extreme west of Ukraine. Even in that case, possible concentrations will be low and will not have a noticeable impact on air quality.

So for Mykolaiv Oblast there is currently no basis to speak of a noticeable deterioration in air conditions due to Saharan dust. This is especially important given that air quality is already a sensitive issue for the region: in Mykolaiv exceedances of formaldehyde levels were recently recorded, and earlier the oblast had already experienced episodes of dust and atmospheric soiling.

In fact, the current situation looks less like a threat to the south of the country and more like another wave of alarming rumors that have partly gotten ahead of the actual forecasts. If changes are felt, it will primarily be in the extreme west of the country, and even there it is not about dangerous concentrations for now, but only a slight admixture of dust in the air mass.
