Children trapped in flames: a fire in the Mykolaiv region nearly ended in tragedy
14-year-old hero: rescued his 3-year-old brother from a burning apartment
On April 10, 2026 a report was received by the emergency hotline 101 about a fire in the village of Trykratne of the Oleksandrivka community, Voznesensk district, Mykolaiv region. The fire started in an apartment on the second floor of a two-story residential building. According to witnesses, children may have been inside the dwelling, which immediately increased the level of danger of the situation. Rescuers of the State Emergency Service (DSNS) arrived promptly at the scene together with the local fire brigade of the village Oleksandrivka. The fire was quickly extinguished over an area of 40 sq. m, preventing its spread to other apartments.
During the clarification of circumstances it became known that at the time of the fire the apartment contained two children aged 3 and 14 years. The older boy, noticing smoke, acted quickly and led his younger brother out onto the balcony, since the entrance door was locked and it was impossible to leave the premises by any other route.
Neighbors, hearing cries for help, responded promptly: they placed a ladder against the balcony and helped the children come down from the second floor, effectively saving them from potentially serious consequences. Medics who arrived on site examined the children. According to preliminary information, they did not sustain serious injuries; however, both were hospitalized for further examination.
The causes of the fire are currently being determined by specialists.
