Sienkevych doesn't want to say whether he opposes the construction of a gas station in the park
The mayor avoids answering. What’s really happening with the development near "Zori"?
In Mykolaiv the situation has again escalated around the construction of a gas station complex in the green zone on Bohoyavlenskyi Ave. It is known that the company “Svit zdorovya” on its third attempt passed public hearings and received a positive conclusion regarding the construction of a gas station with accompanying shops near the “Zorya”-“Mashproekt” plant. The relevant document was published in the state register of environmental impact assessment. According to the report, the project plans to cut down 192 trees, which caused significant public resonance.
During a conversation on April 9, 2026 with journalists from the outlet “Mykvisti” the city’s mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych refused to answer directly whether he supports the gas station construction project in the park, limiting himself to a statement about the unacceptability of tree felling. The mayor emphasized that the city authorities had not made any decisions regarding the felling of green plantings and had not issued the corresponding permits. He also stated that all responsible bodies must act within the law and bear personal responsibility for their decisions.
Oleksandr Sienkevych, answering journalists during the conversation about the gas station construction situation, effectively avoided taking a clear position on the project itself and spoke only about the issue of tree felling:
“The City Council has not granted any permits for tree felling. I do not grant permission for tree felling. So what can I influence? The State Environmental Inspectorate that fines us, or someone else? Let everyone do their job, and all those responsible must bear personal responsibility, criminal or otherwise. And I repeat: the Mykolaiv City Council, despite any insinuations that we supposedly allowed the felling of some trees, did not grant any permits,” answered Oleksandr Sienkevych.
“And in general, what is your attitude toward the construction of a gas station on this particular territory?” — the journalist asked.
“Where are you leading this? I don’t understand,” — answered Oleksandr Sienkevych.
” I want to know your position”, — the journalist emphasized.
“Do you want to twist these news again or what? I don’t want to answer the same question 10 times,” — answered Sienkevych.
“No, the question is only whether you are against or for it?” — said the journalist.
“I told you my opinion that I am against the cutting down of trees. What else do I need to say?” — replied the mayor.
It turns out it’s very convenient to say in general: “I am against cutting down trees.” It’s harder to answer when asked: “Are you for a gas station in the green zone?”. The mayor did not voice his clear position on this construction project that would take the place of the trees.
Earlier, during a briefing, Oleksandr Sienkevych reminded that this land plot was obtained by the company about 10 years ago.
The history of this project dates back to 2014, when the company “Svit zdorovya” was given a plot at the intersection of Kobera Street and Bohoyavlenskyi Avenue to build a sports and wellness complex. Part of the trees on that territory had already been destroyed at that time.
