A deadly virus has entered the city: a quarantine was imposed in one of Mykolaiv's districts due to rabies in a cat

As reported on April 6 2026 at the Main Department of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Mykolaiv Oblast, by decision of the state emergency anti-epizootic commission at the Mykolaiv City Council dated 03.04.2026 (protocol No. 3) quarantine restrictions regarding rabies were established in the city and a plan of measures to eliminate the disease was approved. The cause was laboratory confirmation of rabies in a cat.
The rabies outbreak has been officially declared at the address: Sviatoslava Aleksapolskogo St., 22/2, Zavodskyi District, Mykolaiv. The danger zone is defined as the area bounded by the line from the corner of Novosilska St. to the corner of Lorentsa Justusa St., then to the corner of Kovalska St., then to the corner of Levadivska St. and back to Novosilska St.
The agency reminded that rabies is a deadly viral disease of humans and animals that affects the central nervous system. Infection most often occurs through bites from sick animals that shed the virus in saliva. For this reason residents are urged not to contact wild and stray animals, and in case of a scratch or bite to seek medical attention immediately.
Residents are also asked not to ignore the annual vaccination of household pets. The State Service emphasizes: dogs and cats should be vaccinated against rabies annually, starting from 3 months of age. The veterinary service of Mykolaiv carries out these vaccinations during house-to-house visits in the private sector, as well as on an outpatient basis at local district veterinary clinics.

Against the backdrop of the new case this is an especially alarming signal for the city, since the issue of rabies has repeatedly returned to the information space of Mykolaiv region due to animal bites, vaccine shortages and previous quarantine restrictions.
