Mykolaiv region is aging: 150,000 people have left Mykolaiv — Kim
The outflow of young people and specialists to the Odesa region and Izmail has revealed a shortage of personnel in the region’s port infrastructure
Approximately 150,000 residents left Mykolaiv at the start of the full-scale war and have not returned; this was reported on the air of the program “Chronicles of the Economy” by the head of the regional military administration, Vitalii Kim.
1,200,000, and in the regional center there were approximately 470,000 people. In March–April 2022, when the mass evacuation took place, the lowest figures since independence were recorded: about 600,000 residents remained in the region, and in Mykolaiv — less than 180,000.
Currently, about 1,150,000 people live in the region, in Mykolaiv — about 460,000. Of them about 120,000 are internally displaced persons, mostly from Kherson region.
Commenting on changes in the population structure and the labor market, Vitalii Kim emphasized that some highly qualified personnel, in particular port workers, left to work in neighboring regions. He described the situation as follows:
– If we talk about demographics, then, unfortunately, the active youth and people with professional education, specialists, including those in port infrastructure – many moved to work in Odesa region, to Izmail. Despite the fact that they experienced downtimes here and received only 70% of their salaries. Of the displaced persons at least 50,000 are elderly people, members of socially vulnerable groups, 20% are children. Therefore the demographic situation has deteriorated toward an older population,
At the same time, answering whether the large number of children creates an additional burden for social services and the education system, the head of the regional military administration denied this: compared to the pre-war period there are still fewer children in the region.
