Shooting, a blockade and a bloody clash during mobilization in Odesa

In the Peresypskyi district of Odesa on Akademika Zabolotnoho Street at about 19:00 a joint notification group found a citizen who was wanted for violating military registration rules. During an attempt to escort him to the territorial recruitment center the situation sharply escalated. According to the Odesa Regional TCC and SP, the man carried out an armed attack, as a result of which an officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine sustained severe stab-and-cut wounds to both legs. The TCC stated that the wounded man’s condition is critical and doctors are fighting for his life.

At the same time, according to preliminary information released by law enforcement and several media outlets citing the police, during the conflict passers-by began blocking the exit of service vehicles from the courtyard area. After that one of the members of the notification group used a traumatic weapon (a non-lethal firearm), resulting in another person being wounded. Both victims were hospitalized.

In its statement the Odesa Regional TCC and SP separately emphasized that the crowd, aware of the severely wounded serviceman, not only blocked the vehicles but also threw stones and obstructed emergency evacuation. The agency explains the chaotic maneuvering of the vehicle seen in video from the scene by this. They also claim that a special device was used to repel the attack and protect the lives of the servicemen.

According to local media, the incident unfolded as follows: a group of men in military uniform and their helpers in civilian clothes beat the man and forcibly shoved him into a minibus. In footage published on social networks it is visible how they pull him to the ground and kick him. Passers-by tried to intervene, but one of the TCC officers opened fire on people, shooting the man’s leg. An ambulance arrived at the scene.

Special units worked at the scene, including KORD fighters, patrol officers, explosives technicians, forensic experts and an investigative-operational group. The circumstances of the incident are still being established. The TCC reports signs of crimes under Articles 114-1 and 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, and the police earlier stated that they are checking all details of the incident and the actions of its participants.

Thus, the main point is already known: during mobilization activities in Odesa there was not just a conflict, but a serious knife attack, after which one serviceman was left in critical condition and another person was wounded. The final legal assessment of all actions should be made by investigators.
